The Tesla Model X an instant hit-new electric crossover

Tesla Motors' new electric crossover got off to roaring sales start. The Palo Alto, Calif., carmaker said it took in $40 million in advance sales of the new Model X in the day after revealing it at its design studio.
"On Thursday evening, the night of the reveal, traffic to teslamotors.com increased 2,800 percent," Tesla said. "Two-thirds of all visitors were new to the website."

Its Model X was the third most searched term on Google, while reservations for the new Model S full-size electric sedan rose 30 percent, the niche carmaker said.
Its Model X is equipped with falcon wing doors that open up and out, allowing a person to stand up in the second row and step directlyto the third row. The vehicle seats seven.

Built on the same platform as the Model S, but with a longer wheelbase, the Model X has roughly the same external dimensions as an Audi Q7 SUV but is 40 percent roomier inside, Tesla said.

It will offerdual motor all wheel driveand the option of a 60 or 85 kWh battery. The Model X Performance version will accelerate from 0to 60 miles per hour in 4.4 seconds, making it faster than the Porsche 911 Carrera, Tesla said.

It said the Model X will be priced "competitively with other premium SUVs."

The company said it will build the vehicle at the Tesla Factory in Fremont, Calif., the site of a former production joint venture of General Motors Co. and Toyota Motor Corp.

Production is scheduled to begin at the end of 2013, said Tesla. It expect to produce 10,000 to 15,000 Model X vehicles a year.
Tesla said it has delivered more than 2,000 roadsters to customers worldwide.It will begin deliveries of the Model S, the first premium sedan to be built from the ground up as an electric vehicle, in mid-2012.
